The First Breath of the Morning Is Free

A small note on the moment between sleep and the day.

The first breath of the morning is free.

You did not pay for it. You did not earn it. It arrived without you noticing — as it does every morning, has done your whole life, and will do for a little while longer.

Notice it once, before the day begins. That is enough.

Wherever you are, be there totally. — Eckhart Tolle

If today went badly the moment your feet hit the floor, you can return to that breath. It is still there.

A morning practice does not require a cushion or a candle. It requires only that you do not let the first breath go by unwitnessed. The breath is the smallest, oldest invitation you receive every day. Most days you ignore it.

Try this tomorrow: before checking the phone, before getting out of bed, take one breath that you actually feel. Just one. Notice the small lift of the chest. Notice the body, still soft from sleep. Notice that you are alive, again, against the long odds of the night.

That is a meditation. The shortest one possible.

If you build the day on top of one honest breath, the day will know.
