A Five-Minute Sit for the End of a Hard Day

For the days you walked through the door already used up.

A hard day leaves a residue. The mind keeps replaying the meeting, the difficult message, the small humiliation. By dinner you are still in the day, even though the day has ended.

This sit is for that hour. After work. Before whatever comes next.

The practice

Sit in a chair, somewhere quiet — your bedroom, the back of your apartment, the car after you've parked.

Minute 1 — drop in. Three slow breaths. Don't try to relax. Just notice the body — where it's tight, where it's heavy, where the day is still humming.

Minute 2 — name what's still here. Silently, name three things from the day that are sitting in you. The meeting. The email I haven't replied to. What she said. Don't think about them. Just name them, the way you'd name visitors at a door.

Minute 3 — soften. Place a hand on your chest. One slow breath in for four. Out for six. Repeat five times. The longer exhale tells the nervous system that you are home now, that the danger has passed.

Minute 4 — release. Visualise (or just say silently): I set the day down here. It will be there in the morning. I am off duty. This is permission, not denial. The work continues tomorrow. The you who continues it tomorrow needs the rest of this evening.

Minute 5 — return. Three breaths. Open your eyes. Stand up.

What this is and isn't

This is not therapy. It does not solve hard days. It does not erase the difficulty.

It is a small ritual that separates the day from the evening. Without that separation, the day bleeds into dinner, into the conversation with whoever you live with, into bedtime, into 3 a.m. You wake up still in the day before. That's how weeks turn into months of feeling vaguely depleted.

Five minutes a day, after work, marks a boundary. The day ends. The evening begins. They are not the same thing.

You may have to do this every workday for a while before the body believes you. That is fine. The body learns slowly.

So does the practice.
